Unlocking success: your ultimate guide to IELTS preparation in London.
IELTS what it is and how to pass it
The InternationalEnglish Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for advanced education and international mobility. It is designed to assess the candidate’s language skills required for study and work. It is part of the University of Cambridge, the British Council and IDP IELTS Australia and was founded in 1989. You can prepare for the IELTS in London at a language school.
Taking into account the globalized world in which we live and the thousands of opportunities that arise today with the Internet. Validating and certifying your level of English is very important either to work in international companies or to study in a foreign university.
IELTS – what is it and what is it for?
The official IELTS tests all your English language skills and is designed to reflect how English is used in real life.
There are two different types of IELTS tests:
● The Academic Module: this IELTS module is designed for students who wish to study at English-speaking universities, whether at undergraduate, masters or doctoral level. It is also taken by those who wish to work in specific professions, such as medicine or dentistry.
● The General Training module: this IELTS module is for those hoping to emigrate to the UK, Australia, New Zealand or Canada, or for those hoping to study in an English-speaking country below degree level.
Both modules consist of four parts: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The reading and writing sections are different for the two modules, while the listening and speaking sections are the same.
If you manage to pass this exam, you will have a free bar to study in foreign universities or move to an English-speaking country (always speaking in terms of language requirements).
IELTS HOW IT WORKS
The test always works the same way, with the same structure: 60 minutes dedicated to reading, writing and listening. The speaking time is between 11 and 14 minutes.
Reading: in both modules, candidates have to identify key points, important information, understand the meaning, recognize the writer’s opinion and summarize arguments effectively.
Writing: candidates are graded according to a series of criteria. Taking into account whether they have responded to the question posed, whether they have used an appropriate language style and whether they have organized their ideas clearly. They will also be graded on grammatical accuracy, vocabulary variety and their ability to correctly connect ideas, sentences and paragraphs.
Listening: there are 4 texts, 2 of them set in a social context and 2 in a more educational or academic context. Texts can be conversations, discussions or a monologue. There will be a variety of accents.
Speaking: candidates are scored on their ability to express themselves clearly and accurately, to answer questions appropriately, their grammar and vocabulary, their level of “naturalness” and their pronunciation and intonation.
The IELTS Speaking test may take place on a different day than the other tests.
A very interesting fact to take into account when doing the IELTS equivalence is the score obtained in either the Cambridge or TOEFL exams. In our articles we have developed the most relevant information about them and guide you on IELTS equivalencies.
For example: if you get between a 3.5 and 4.5 in IELTS, it will be equivalent to a PET pass in Cambridge.
