Benefits of reading English books for beginners
Learning English is of utmost importance for your professional training but also for your day-to-day life, since according to studies, half of the content available on the Internet is in English. When learning a language, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very useful. There are many advantages associated with reading, among them:
Learning vocabulary in context
When you read, you usually find new words. If there are too many new words for you, then the level is too high and you should read something simpler. But if there are, for example, a maximum of five new words per page, you will learn the vocabulary easily. You may not even need to use a dictionary, as you can play at guessing the meaning from the rest of the reading (from the context). Not only do you learn new words, but you see how they are used naturally.
Model for writing
When you read, it serves as an example for you to write. The texts you read show you structures and expressions that you can use when writing.
View correctly structured language
When people write, they tend to use “correct” English with proper grammatical structure. This is not always the case when people talk. Therefore, by reading you see and learn grammatical English in a natural way.
You learn at your own pace
You can read at your own pace, no matter if it is too slow or too fast. You can read ten pages in 30 minutes or spend an hour reading a single page. It doesn’t matter. The choice is yours. This does not happen easily when hearing or speaking. This is one of the great advantages of reading, because each person reasons at a different speed.
If you choose something to read that you enjoy it can be really interesting and enriching. For example, if you like to read about soccer in your own language, why not read about soccer in English? You will learn about soccer and improve your English at the same time.
Easy books to read in English – level A1
Before you start reading in English, it is recommended to follow the following list of tips, as it will help you to choose the best book and you will be able to learn more easily.
- Try to read at an appropriate level. Read something you can (more or less) understand. If you have to stop every three words to look in the dictionary, you won’t be interested and will soon become discouraged.
- Write down the new vocabulary. If you find some new words on a page, write them in your vocabulary book. But you don’t have to write them down as you read. Instead, try to guess their meaning as you read; mark them with a pen; then come back when you have finished reading to check them in a dictionary and add them to your vocabulary book.
- Try to read regularly. For example, read for a period of time once a day. Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday. Set a reading time and try to stick to it. For example, you can read for fifteen minutes when you go to bed, or when you get up, or at lunchtime.
- Get organized. Have everything ready: something to read, a marker to underline difficult words, a dictionary, your vocabulary book, a pen to write down new words, choose a magazine or a book on a topic you like.
- Read something that interests you.
The books are mainly divided into:
- Non-fiction (history, biography, travel, cooking, etc.)
- Fiction (short stories and novels)
Some texts are easier to read than others. It often depends on the author. Agatha Christie, for example, wrote in an easier style and with a simpler vocabulary than Stephen King.
Short stories can be a good option for learning a language because they are… short. It’s like reading a whole book in a few pages. You have all the excitement of a story in a book, but you only have to read 5,000 or 10,000 words. So you can quickly finish the story and feel like you’ve accomplished something. The short stories are published in magazines, in story books and on the Internet.
